want het vergankelijke lichaam bezwaard de ziel

installation view

“because the perishable body burdens the soul” isn’t an idea original to Christianity. It has been present throughout different religions, alive and dead. Isn’t it intriguing how even religion can die, a system which also explains life after death?

The first one to describe the body and the soul as separate entities, was Plato. And he died too.

Our body perishes after our soul leaves it. But where does the soul go? Where does the soul of the painting rest? What is the body of the painting? Where does religion go after it has met its slow demise?
